Female Cats will heal better if you confine her to a small area for 10 days (laundry room, bathroom or large dog crate). This will allow the tissue time to heal & avoid causing the incision to open.

Male Cats need to be confined to a small area for 2 days. Make sure he is back to normal eating, drinking and using the litter box before you let him go outside or run the house. The incision for male cats is directly on the scrotum & is left open to allow for drainage. Small amounts of drainage/discharge is normal for up to three days.

Food/Water – Offer food and water when you get home. When you go to bed, tonight only, remove the water (leave the food) and give the water back in the morning 24/7.

Onsior Pain Meds – If you purchased Onsior, start in 3 days in the evening ( 3 days from surgery). See if she will eat it, if not pill her or put in her food. All cats receive a pain injection at the time of surgery that last 3 days. Male had their pain injection also, therefore they do not need take home pain meds.

Suture - Females have suture under the skin but nothing to revmoe on the outside. If a knot forms under the skin, this is normal suture reaction. Check incision every day for oozing and opening. Males have no suture therefore an e-collar is not required. Spot bleeding and swelling is normal.

Dogs cannot regulate body temperature because of the anesthesia. Keep in a controlled environment for the next 24 hours or until they are eating and drinking normal. All dogs should go out on a leash to  urinate/defecate and then return inside to rest. MALE DOGS - watch scrotum for swelling. NO LICKING!!!!

Food/Water – Their appetite should gradually return with 24-36 hours. Dogs tend to overeat so when you get home offer a small amount of food and water. Two bites of their regular diet, two licks of water. Take away. Wait 30-40 minutes. If they don’t throw up, they can have more. If they don’t want food or water tonight, put food and water down so they have it available.

E-Collars – Wear for 10 days. No guaranteed so check your cone when you get home! Shove cone back to the shoulders, take nose to the ceiling. If nose goes past the cone, they can reach their incision. Tape a folded towel around neck to keep cone pushed forward over their head/nose.

Pain Meds – No pain meds the night of surgery. Start meds the morning after surgery IF they are back to normal eating and drinking. If not, then start pain meds once they are eating and drinking. Do not give human medication to the animal. It is dangerous and can be fatal.

Suture – No suture to remove. A knot under skin is normal. Check incision every day for oozing or opening.

Keep males away from unspayed females for 30 days. Keep females away from unneutered males for seven days. Be prepared to keep pets separate during the recovery period.

Check the incision site twice daily. Females should have no drainage; redness & swelling should be minimal.

Appetite should return gradually within 24 hours of surgery. Do not change the Animal’s diet at this time, & do not give them junk food, table scraps, milk, or any other people food during the recovery period. Feeding them their regular diet will help avoid gastro-intestinal upset.
